The Master of Arts in Social Work at the European Distance University in Hamburg is a social science program that follows on from the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. The program lasts 18 months and can be completed through distance learning on a full-time or part-time basis.

The Social Work (M.A.) program deals with the impacts of societal changes such as sustainability, digitalization, migration, and social change on the field of social work. Different levels are considered, from society as the client to organizations and institutions as structures, and finally to clients as recipients of social services. Competence areas covered include changes in living situations and environments, new research concepts, digitalization, migration, economic models, self-understanding of social work, changes in the working world, as well as specific concepts and methods for managing transformations.

The program is aimed at graduates with a bachelor's degree in social work or equivalent educational qualifications, such as childhood and youth education, special education, or educational science. Students aim to obtain a forward-looking qualification to develop innovative concepts for the future of social work, take on leadership roles in social institutions, and actively shape changes in the working world.

The program includes the use of study guides, three seminars (either in person or virtual), three webinars, as well as various digital teaching and learning materials such as instructional videos and podcasts. Through the practical relevance and timeliness of the course content, the program prepares students for the demands of social work and enables them to pursue a well-founded and future-oriented career in this field.
